Focus On...

Each Newsletter we will focus on one of our practitioners. This month it is Suzanne Nicholson of A Beautiful Birth -Hypnobirthing Newcastle.

Suzanne is passionate about improving health and wellbeing and has a background in the NHS within public health where she worked for 11 years as a Health Improvement Specialist/Lead with a specific focus on children and young people.

After being made redundant in 2015, she decided to enrol on a Hypnobirthing teacher training course in London and took the leap into the world of self-employment with the birth of her very own business:

A Beautiful Birth - Hypnobirthing Newcastle. suzanne.jpg

Since then her business has gone from strength to strength as word has spread about the positive effects of hypnobirthing. Celebrities such as Fearne Cotton, Angelina Jolie, Gisele Bündchen and Jessica Alba have all raved about it. The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton was also rumoured to have practiced hypnobirthing in the run up to both of her births!

Suzanne teaches a variety of self hypnosis and deep relaxation techniques including recordings/scripts, visualisations, affirmations and breathing exercises. She also helps to empower couples by providing them with all of the knowledge and skills they need to be able to ask questions of the birth professionals/care givers so that they can make the most informed choice when it comes to their birth and their baby. This includes greater awareness of the pros and cons of being induced as well as all of the different interventions that may be presented

Suzanne, teacher and owner of A Beautiful Birth says “I feel very privileged to be able to get to know, teach and empower couples on how to have a more positive and relaxed pregnancy and birth experience. I also find that by the end, it’s the dads/partners that are the biggest advocates of hypnobirthing, as they all tell me how grateful they are for all the information they’ve received as a result of doing the course.”

  • Some client testimonials:

“I know for a fact that her (my wife’s) anxiety levels have reduced greatly since this course. I don’t think we could’ve hoped for a better teacher” (Osh, Dad)

“Amazing course!!! Made me and my husband feel calm and positive and look forward to the challenge of childbirth!! Highly recommended.” (Kate, Mum)

For more information or to book a course you can contact Suzanne through NPBC or visit her website. Suzanne will be at our coffee afternoon on 18th April at Brunton Park community centre.

Focus On...

Each Newsletter we will focus on one of our practitioners. This month is the turn of Karen Chapman and Helen Symonds from Messy Monkeys:

Frustrated by the lack of creative play activities available for their own toddlers, in 2010, Karen Chapman and Helen Symonds decided they would join forces to create messy monkeys and provide a fun, friendly, relaxed environment where babies and pre-schoolers could share fantastically messy new experiences with their parents/carers.

The messy monkeys mantra, ‘it’s all about the process not the product’, is reflected in the inventiveness and scale of mess created – each week’s themed activity has new materials to explore as well as an opportunity to make something unique to take home. Luckily there is also a well needed bubble bath provided for each and every monkey at the end of the sessions too!

Karen, Co-Director of messy monkeys says,

“It’s a fantastic fact that some of our ‘monkeys’ have been coming to the classes for more than half of their lives! It’s really quite an honour to have played such an important role in so many childhood experiences. Parents have told us that messy monkeys is the highlight of their child’s week, and from a personal perspective, there can’t be very many jobs where you are paid to play all day and bring smiles to grown-up’s faces too.”

We’re proud to say that messy monkeys is the region’s original and definitely the messiest messy play group, providing opportunities for your child to explore different materials and textures, learn about cause and effect and to develop motor and language skills. Free and creative play is an essential part of a child’s learning process, assisting in the understanding of Science and Maths as well as developing talent in Arts and Crafts and expanding vocabulary too.

By focusing on activities you couldn’t normally encourage at home, (whole body painting is a firm favourite) we allow children the opportunity to gain confidence in their abilities; praising individual achievements at every turn, encouraging self-expression in all its glorious forms and above all saying ‘at messy monkeys….yes you can do that!’

messy monkeys receive consistently positive feedback, just like this Mum’s comment,

“messy monkeys is doing what I hoped; giving my baby the chance to get messy without having to mess up my house, mixing with other children and experiencing different activities which I wouldn’t have time to set up.”

Or this from one of our Dads,

“The sessions are imaginatively planned, very well organised, a real contribution to my son’s development and fun!”

And at the end you don't have to do any of the clearing up! For more information see our website or contact karen@messy-monkeys.com.

Focus On...

Each newsletter we will be focusing on one of our practitioners. This month is it Caireen Hart who runs our antenatal and postnatal Yoga sessions.

Caireen became a Hatha yoga teacher in 2010. She specialises in pregnancy and postnatal yoga which she found invaluable when she had her two children. She found yoga not only helped her to remain fit and flexible throughout pregnancy but also gave her the tools and techniques to stay calm and focused during labour, birth and beyond.

Caireen became part of the NBPC team in 2012 because she felt our ethos matched with what she was striving for in terms of supporting pregnant women, new mums, babies and families in early parenthood.

Her Mother & Baby postnatal yoga classes are designed with mums in mind, and have a focus on working at a gentler pace to rebuild strength in the body. These classes give new mums the opportunity to exercise and have fun and socialise with their baby and other new mums.

As the mother of two young children, Caireen has continued to use yoga to cope with the demands of parenthood. She knows what it is like to be a busy mum and has recently started a Bring-a-Toddler-to-Yoga class which aims to give you some time to strengthen, stretch and tone your body without having to worry about childcare. Toys and mats are provided so children can watch, play or copy their parents.

Practising yoga has numerous health benefits, here are just a few:

Increased flexibility

Increased muscle strength and tone

Improved respiration, energy and vitality

Maintaining a balanced metabolism

Weight loss and management

Lowers blood pressure

Improves balance

Improves concentration and focus

Relaxes the body & mind

Caireen qualified with the British Wheel of Yoga. Her classes are fun and friendly. She teaches in Gosforth, Gateshead and Heaton.

You can find her on Facebook: Caireen Hart Yoga, and for more info or to book on a class see our website.

Focus On...

Each newsletter we will be focusing on one of our practitioners. This month is it Debbie Donaldson who runs our Bump Aerobics, Buggyfit and Aerobic Mums, Tums and Bums classes, as well as Postnatal Hula Hoops!

Debbie became a fitness instructor in 2000, after many years of engaging in dancing and fitness activities. After having her daughter in 2004 she became a specialist pre and postnatal fitness instructor as she wanted to keep herself fit and in shape and to help others to do the same.

In 2007 Debbie moved to Newcastle and this gave her the opportunity to set up Buggyfit (previously Pushy Mothers) and other pre and postnatal fitness classes.

Debbie has been part of Newcastle Pregnancy and Baby Centre from the start with her Aerobic Bumps class, and later added a postnatal Aerobic Mums, Tums and Bums class. Debbie is also qualified to teach fitness to children through the HulaHooping Hoopstarz programme, and went on to develop this programme to suit postnatal women.

Over the last 9 years Debbie has helped hundreds of mums get back in to shape after having a baby. She is a committee member of the Guild of Postnatal Exercise Instructors pursuing up to date and accurate information on pre and postnatal fitness. Debbie's classes are always great fun and highly motivating. Her mantra is there is no such thing as poor weather, only poor clothing, so get out and get going!

Linzy qualified as a midwife in 1999 and worked in NHS hospitals around the region, most recently at the RVI, Newcastle where she taught antenatal education.

In 2007 Linzy qualified as a Certified Infant Massage Instructor with the International Association of Infant Massage and this started her on her journey of setting up her own classes to teach parents the enormous benefits of baby massage. She enjoyed teaching Baby Massage classes so much that Linzy went on to become a Baby Yoga Certified Instructor and Kindermusik Educator, and created her extremely popular Baby Yoga and Twinkle Toes classes drawing on her years of experience and knowledge.

More recently Linzy started teaching her own antenatal classes Bump, Baby and Beyond and became a Daisy Birthing practitioner too. In the middle of all this she still found time to have two children Robyn and Oliver!

Linzy is passionate about supporting women and their partners throughout pregnancy, labour and into the first few years of parenthood. Focus On...

Each Newsletter we will be focussing on one of our Practitioners. This month it is Josie Lucas of Bumps and Babies Pilates

Josie is one of the founding members of Newcastle Pregnancy and Baby Centre. She runs classes in Pilates and also one-to-one sessions for clients who feel they need a more personalised approach. Josie originally trained as a dancer but went on to train with Body Control Pilates Association in London, qualifying in 2002.

Josie set up her Bumps and Babies Pilates classes with the vision that pregnant and postnatal women could benefit enormously from the strengthening and balancing exercises, while enjoying a friendly and supportive class. Her classes Mums & Tums Pilates are great fun and help women at every stage in their pregnancy.

Josie quickly realised that although women take care of themselves during pregnancy, they find it difficult to find time in the postnatal period that follows. She set up two more classes – Pilates Babies and Pilates at Play – for mothers to attend with their babies. These classes focus on helping women to recover in the postnatal period, using exercises that can be done at home with baby in the natural course of nappy changing, feeding, playing!

Josie has had 3 children (so far...) and found her own experiences of pregnancy and postnatal helped to develop her classes further. She has a great relationship with the women who attend her classes, encouraging a supportive atmosphere and new friendships among her clients. For more information about her classes see the NPBC website or contact Josie at bumpsandbabiespilates@hotmail.co.uk

Focus On...

Each Newsletter we will be focussing on one of our Practitioners. This month it is Jude Soames of SoamesTherapy Massage and Postnatal Doula.

Jude is one of the founding members of Newcastle Pregnancy and Baby Centre and continues to work behind the scenes in an admin role. She has been working with pregnant and postnatal women since 2002 when she started training in ante and postnatal massage with Suzanne Yates of Well Mother.

Jude had her own children in 2005 and 2007 and her experiences while pregnant and postnatal have helped to inform her work. She has recently undergone training to be a postnatal doula and is now a member of Doula UK and offers this service to all new mums.

Jude's pregnancy and postnatal massage takes place with the woman lying on her side as if sleeping. This is a safe and comfortable position during pregnancy and following labour. This side position enables Jude to work deeply, smoothly and gently into the muscles of the back, shoulders and legs – all areas commonly affected by pregnancy and labour. The massage strokes are repetitive and flowing, reducing stress, easing strain and releasing tension.

If you want to treat yourself during pregnancy and postnatal then you could do no better than to contact Jude. Her massages have been described as “Heavenly!”. soamestherapy@aol.com

The classes are fun (how can they be otherwise when babies are involved?!) and the focus is on helping women to be able to progress and learn more about their bodies and how Pilates can benefit them in the future.

  • Buggyfit

These classes are run by Debbie Donaldson who is very experienced in fitness for pregnant and postnatal women. The Buggyfit classes take place in parks around the region and combine a workout with fresh air and socialising. And as Debbie says “there is no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing...” so you have no excuse not to enjoy yourself!

  • HulaHoops

Would you like to go back to your childhood when challenges were simpler, you were allowed to like inane pop songs, and you laughed and laughed? Well you can revisit that time at the Hula Hoops class run by Debbie Donaldson. This class is designed to improve tone and strengthen posture and has expert postnatal fitness knowledge behind it, but it is also just brilliant fun! (Unfortunately babies and children can't join in on this one – they would steal all the fun for themselves!)

Plus, she has classes in Low Fell on a Tuesday evening, and Josie is running her Mums and Tums antenatal Pilates class in Heworth on Mondays starting in September. So we are finally embracing the South of the Tyne – let’s hope this is just the start!

Events

NPBC will be at the Tiny Lives Nearly New sale in Trinity Church, Gosforth on 6th July – all proceeds go the Tiny Lives charity at the RVI. Usually these sales are full of good quality clothes, toys and baby paraphernalia and well worth a visit. We hope to see you there!

We would like to remind you that NPBC antenatal, postnatal and baby classes continue to run during the Summer months, so you, your bump and your baby can continue to attend any of our classes. Just get in touch for more info.

New Classes

We have some new classes starting in June – Daisy Birthing. These classes help you to prepare for an enjoyable and positive labour with exercise, information, support and coping techniques. Contact us if you would like to know more, and pass this on to any friends who are expecting.

This week Debbie Donaldson our aerobics tutor is introducing some post-natal hula hooping classes. Even though I am very post natal (my youngest is 6 years!) I just couldn’t resist and will be joining the class. This first session is fully booked, but if you fancy joining us then just get in touch.
