Resolving Birth Trauma

With Ruth Olayinka, registered Clinical Hypnotherapist.

The birth of your baby is one of the most significant days of your family’s entire life, and one which should be looked back on with warmth, love, joy and excitement. Unfortunately though, for some families, this is not always the case.

Women and birth partners who experience birth trauma, alongside anxiety symptoms, can often encounter difficulties bonding with their baby and can experience thoughts of harm or even suicide. These difficult thoughts and feelings are not easy to admit to, and so secrecy and isolation can further compound the problem.

However, even a perceived ’normal’ birth can potentially result in trauma if this is your experience inside.  And if this is your experience, it is a valid one.   You are your own expert and just by taking the time to listen to your needs you will know yourself if there is something about your birthing experience that you can benefit from clearing.

About...

Resolving Birth Trauma aims to enable a mother or her birth partner to experience their birth memories without any associated negative emotional response. Significant contributing factors to birth trauma often include:

  • Incidence of emergency intervention
  • Feelings of intense fear during labour & Pregnancy
  • A difficult labour in terms of length and intensity
  • Not feeling listened to or consulted
  • Feeling loss of control or humiliation during labour or pregnancy.
  • The event of a distressing birth outcome

Trauma is often experienced following one or more particularly traumatic experiences.  Symptoms often include feelings of anxiety, hyper-vigilance, trouble sleeping, flashbacks, emotional distress and irritability.
